Mari Koppanen, “Fungal future – can tradition control innovation?”, Talk. Department of Design.
Designers are no longer expected to simply create form, function, or aesthetics. Design and science are fusing together, as new innovative materials are emerging from collaborations between designers and scientists. Fungal materials are renewable, sustainable and bio-degradable.
Fungal Future – Can tradition control innovation? aims to open a stage for discussions about ethical, environmental, and cultural-societal issues in the field of design. The presentation seeks to identify the balance between cultural preservation, intellectual misappropriation and innovation.
It explores to what extend material’s cultural heritage defines contemporary artistic, material-focused research.
